Heatwaves are a growing threat to human health, infrastructure, and ecosystems, especially in urban areas. This report, a collaboration between the University of Tasmania and local authorities, funded by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Grant, analyses heatwave risks in five Tasmanian suburbs. The study focuses on tree canopy cover, land surface temperature, and social vulnerability to identify high-risk areas and suggest green infrastructure improvements. Additionally, it maps outdoor refuges to aid in future heatwave mitigation.
This assessment aims to enhance community resilience and protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat events.
