Geoneon has developed algorithms to calculate the vulnerability of assets to natural disasters on a regional scale.

We think that identifying the spatial distribution of habited and in-habited areas, infrastructure and communication networks threatened by natural disasters is critical to make informed decisions about reducing the number of affected people, direct economic loss, damage to critical infrastructure, and disruption of critical services.

Natural disaster events are increasing

As infrastructure assets age, population grows, and extreme weather events become more frequent, the number of people affected by natural disasters, direct economic loss, disruption of critical services, and maintenance costs of infrastructure are soaring.

Natural disaster events have increased dramatically globally in the past 20 years, claiming 1.23 million lives, and resulting in approximately US$ 2.97 trillion in global economic losses.


Geoneon’s multi-hazard vulnerability analysis

Geoneon’s algorithms can integrate various natural disaster types and multiple economic and social metrics to calculate the vulnerability of infrastructure assets to future events.

These inputs are critical to make informed decisions about planning of mitigation and maintenance, and avoiding new infrastructure in high susceptibility areas or ensuring they are constructed to be able to withstand natural disasters.

Geoneon has been working with the City of Hobart to develop an infrastructure model including economic and social metrics. The model consists of 1.5 million cells, each including area and replacement value for eighteen asset types, and the Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas.
